The Minister for Youth and Sports, Mustapha Ussif, has disclosed that the infrastructure to host the 2023 African Games comes at a hefty price tag of over $195 million.
Key venues such as the Borteyman Sports Complex, the University of Ghana Stadium, and the Games Village have been earmarked to host the prestigious competition, with the government shouldering the responsibility for their construction and completion.
Addressing the media in a Press Briefing held on Monday to provide updates ahead of the games, Minister Ussif elaborated on the financial investment made to ensure these venues are ready.
"The funding for the projects, crucial for hosting and organizing the Games, has been effectively managed, with all contractors duly compensated," he stated.
"The total contract value for the provision of facilities for the Games, sanctioned by this esteemed House, stands at $195,2555,153.74."
Breaking down the costs, Minister Ussif revealed that the Borteyman facility, developed by Contracta Construction UK Limited, incurred expenses of $145,086,057.54. The University of Ghana Stadium, executed by Consar Limited, came with a price tag of $34,102,135, while the Games Village, entrusted to Mawums Limited, accounted for $16,066,961.20.
The 2023 African Games kicked off on Sunday, March 3, with the grand opening ceremony scheduled for Friday, March 8.
