Six arrested, GH¢300,000 recovered after robbery attack on Bono East highway

The Ghana Police Service has arrested six suspects and recovered GH¢300,000 following a robbery attack on the Portor-Gurumpe Highway in the Bono East Region.

The Bono East Regional Police Command said officers stationed at the Portor Police Barrier received intelligence on the night of July 19, 2026, that a robbery was taking place a short distance from the checkpoint.

According to the Police, a team was immediately dispatched to the scene, where some of the suspects reportedly escaped into a nearby bush. One suspect, identified as 24-year-old Abdul Sadat Ali, who was driving a Toyota Voxy, was arrested.

Police said during questioning, Ali allegedly named Samad Issahaka, also 24, the driver of a Kia Rhino truck, as an accomplice, leading to his arrest.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the owner of the Kia Rhino, Yahaya Seidu, 35, had hired his driver to take him to Buipe to purchase cattle. Police allege that the driver, knowing that his employer was carrying a large amount of money, conspired with five others to carry out the robbery.

The suspects, who were allegedly armed with a toy pistol, are said to have followed the Kia Rhino from Offinso in the Ashanti Region before intercepting it along the Portor-Gurumpe Highway and making away with GH¢300,000 in cash.

The Police said personnel from the Counter Terrorism Unit, supported by a local patrol team, pursued the suspects into a nearby bush, resulting in the arrest of four additional suspects.

They were identified as Abdul Rahman Mashud, 21; Asigri Avoka, 25; Awini Stephen, 19; and Faisal Salifu, 26.

A search conducted on the suspects led to the recovery of the entire GH¢300,000, according to the Police.

The suspects are currently in custody and assisting with investigations into the robbery.

The Bono East Regional Police Command praised the “alertness and professionalism” of officers at the Portor Police Barrier and the Counter Terrorism team, while reaffirming its commitment to protecting lives and property in the region.
