Ghana's President receives procurement report to begin Green Digital City feasibility studies

President John Dramani Mahama has received a procurement report to commence consultancy and feasibility studies for the proposed Green Digital City project, a government initiative aimed at reducing pressure on Accra’s infrastructure and urban systems.

The President said the project has progressed to an advanced stage, with the next phase focusing on assessing its feasibility and developing a comprehensive design framework for the proposed city.

He made the disclosure on Tuesday, July 21, during a courtesy call by the Greater Accra Regional House of Chiefs, Members of Parliament from the region and government appointees at the Jubilee House.

President Mahama explained that the Green Digital City project forms part of the government’s long-term strategy to address challenges associated with rapid urbanisation and the growing pressure on Accra.

“Only today I received the procurement report for the start of work for consultancy and the feasibility study for what we call the Green Digital City,” he said.

The proposed development is expected to cover an area stretching from the Accra Plains towards parts of the Eastern and Volta Regions.

According to President Mahama, the project will create a new urban centre capable of hosting some government institutions and agencies that may eventually be relocated from Accra.

He said the initiative is intended to reduce congestion in the capital, support planned urban expansion and promote a more balanced distribution of economic and administrative activities across the country.

Accra has experienced increasing pressure on its infrastructure in recent years due to population growth, traffic congestion, housing shortages and rising demand for public services.

The Green Digital City project is therefore being positioned as a long-term solution to support sustainable urban development and establish an alternative centre for government, business and technology-driven activities outside the existing capital.

President Mahama assured that the government would continue with the necessary planning and technical processes to ensure the project is properly designed and implemented to meet Ghana’s future development needs.
