Cup of Nations 2023 AFCON: Algeria takes on Angola tonight to kick off Group D
MON, 15 JAN 2024

Group D of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament will come alive on Monday, January 15, when Algeria locks horns with Angola.

Besides Algeria and Angola, the other countries set to compete in the group include Mauritania and Burkina Faso.

Algeria.
The Desert Foxes of Algeria are counted among the favourites to lift the 2023 AFCON trophy at the end of the tournament.

They're heading into the first game as the most in-form side in the group. In the last five matches of Algeria, the Foxes have recorded five wins, scoring 14 goals and conceding just two.

On the road to the AFCON, Algeria dominated their group and won as many as five matches while the other game ended in a draw.

Although the group opener against Angola will be tough, Algeria has enough quality to secure a win.

Angola.
Nicknamed 'The Palancas Negras' which translates to Black Antelopes, Angola has prepared well for the 2023 AFCON and wants to leave a mark.

In the qualifiers for the AFCON, they struggled but managed to secure their ticket.

'The Palancas Negras' only managed two wins but picked some important points from three other games that ended in draws to make the qualification possible.

In the run-up to the start of the AFCON, Angola has just one win from the last five matches, with the other four games ending in draws.

With a solid defense, the Black Antelopes will look to take advantage to fight for points to reach the knockout stage of the 2023 edition of the Africa Cup of Nations.

Burkina Faso.
After finishing 4th at the 2021 AFCON, the Stallions of Burkina Faso have returned to push for the title in the 2023 edition.

Yes, the qualifying journey was not easy for the Stallions but they sure have the experience to compete at the tournament as shown in past editions.

With three wins, one draw, and one defeat in the last five matches, Burkina Faso has prepared well for the tournament.

Mauritania.
The same cannot be said about Mauritania with the national team of the country heading into their first match at the 2023 AFCON with just a win in the last five matches.

However, having scored 9 goals in the qualifiers, same as Algeria, Mauritania will fancy their chances as underdogs to cause an upset in Group D.
