The Black Meteors of Ghana on Friday night put up an impressive performance in the U23 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualification match against their counterparts from Algeria.
Both the Ghana U23 and Algeria U23 national teams are looking to qualify for the 2023 U23 AFCON to stand a chance of qualifying for the next Olympic Games.
In the first leg of the final qualification round to the U23 Champions, Algeria played home today and aimed at securing a big win to make the second leg in Ghana a mere formality.
However, following a strong display from the Black Meteors, things did not go according to plan for the North African side.
After a goalless draw from the first half, Ghana opened the scoring in the 83rd minute when talented teenager Abdul Fatawu Issahaku scored with a spectacular strike from the centre circle.
While the Black Meteors will continue to play well, a penalty kick converted by the Algerians in injury time forced the match to end in a 1-1 draw.
That means that the contest will be settled in Kumasi, Ghana next week. The second leg is scheduled to be played at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium on Tuesday, March 28.
