Interim manager of Nigeria’s Super Eagles, Augustine Eguavoen has left his role following the team’s elimination in the Round of 16 at the ongoing 2021 Africa Cup of Nations [AFCON] tournament in Cameroon.
The Super Eagles who were touted as favourites succumbed to a 1-0 defeat at the hands of the Carthage Eagles on Sunday evening.
Eguavoen, took over as an interim coach following the sacking of former manager Gernot Rhor in early December last year led the three-time champions to three straight wins in the Group Stage against Egypt, Sudan and Guinea-Bissau, making them the only team at the 2021 edition of the tournament to win all group games.
However, the team fell short against a Covid-stricken Tunisian team to exit the competition in the Round of 16.
Speaking after the game, Eguavoen said, “What happens next is that I’m the interim coach and Technical Director of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF).
“I will go back to my position and allow the NFF to make a decision on the way forward”.
Nigeria will now shift attention to their upcoming World Cup Qualifying match against Ghana’s Black Stars in March.
