Ghana captain, Andre Ayew has admitted that the performance of the Black Stars at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament was unacceptable.
The West African giants were one of the favourites to win the last edition of the continental showpiece hosted in Egypt.
Despite going to the tournament with some promise, the team’s aim of winning the AFCON title could not be achieved.
On the back of an unimpressive showing in the Group Stage, Ghana managed to progress to the Round 16 but failed the test of facing North African side Tunisia.
Speaking on the performance of the Black Stars at that tournament, Andre Ayew has noted that he takes full responsibility as team captain for the poor showing.
“I take full responsibility for that campaign as the captain it was unacceptable and we have spoken about this as a team," Ayew said in an interview with told BBC Sport Africa.
In the game against Tunisia in the Round 16 of the 2019 AFCON, Ghana crashed out after losing on penalties.
The Black Stars have now qualified for the 2022 AFCON in Cameroon and hope to finally end the age-old trophy drought.
