Ghanaian international, Tony Yeboah has revealed that Eintracht Frankfurt stopped his transfer to Bayern Munich in 1995 to avoid the fury of their supporters.
The striker started his career in Ghana with Kumasi Asante Kotoko but subsequently moved to Okwahu United to enjoy playing time before he eventually earned a transfer to German side 1. FC Saarbrücken.
After 2 years at the club, Tony Yeboah signed for Eintracht Frankfurt where he established himself as one of the deadliest attackers in the division.
In 1995, there was interest from giants Bayern Munich after he had won the Bundesliga top scorer award twice in a row in 1993 and 1994.
Eintracht Frankfurt will however not allow him to join the Bavarians even though he was ready to call time.
“Normally I should have gone to Bayern Munich but Frankfurt would not allow because the fans would kill them so they said no: we are not allowing you to go even though Bayern was 100% interested”, Tony Yeboah has explained in an interview on GTV Sports Plus.
Later, the ex-Black Stars striker secured a transfer to English Premier League side Leeds United for a reported fee of £3.4 million.
“I didn’t know Leeds but when the offer came I said why not? Then I had a problem with the coach at Frankfurt so I decided I want to play football, I want my peace”, the striker shared.
Tony Yeboah enjoyed an illustrious career in Europe and is largely remembered for scoring great goals.
