Six arrested over deadly New Winneba clashes, single-barrel gun recovered

The Central Regional Police Command has arrested six men in connection with violent clashes at New-Winneba that claimed three lives and left several others injured on Tuesday.

The suspects have been identified as Kweku Kakraba, 52; Arko Thomas, 19; Samuel Tulasi, 19; Samuel Gyasi, 22; Emmanuel Okyere, 22; and Seth Osei, 22.

The arrests follow violent confrontations reported in parts of the town, during which clubs, machetes and stones were allegedly used, resulting in several injuries and widespread panic among residents.

According to a police statement issued on Wednesday, a locally manufactured single-barrel gun and an empty AAA cartridge were recovered from the scene.

Emergency responders and residents rushed the injured to health facilities in Winneba for treatment. Three of the victims later died, while others remained on admission.

The Police Command has since deployed additional personnel to the area and commenced investigations to establish the cause of the clashes, determine whether the attacks were coordinated and identify all persons involved.

As part of measures to restore and maintain calm, the police have established six snap checkpoints and intensified day-and-night patrols across the affected areas.

Personnel from the Police Intelligence Directorate and the Criminal Investigation Department have also been deployed to monitor developments and support the investigation.

The police have appealed to residents, community leaders and traditional authorities to cooperate with the investigation and provide information that could assist in identifying other persons connected to the violence.

The six suspects are currently being held at the Cape Coast Divisional Police Headquarters as investigations continue.

The Police Command said the situation in New-Winneba remains calm and under control.
