Nigerian singer Teniola Apata, popularly known as Teni, has opened up about the challenging journey that led to her significant weight loss, revealing that a severe bout of COVID-19 was the catalyst.
Speaking during an interview on Queen’s Mic, the 'Case' crooner recalled how terrible she felt when she contracted the virus, noting that she could barely breathe.
The singer revealed that her mother became her biggest support system during that dark period. According to Teni, her mother expressed sympathy and subsequently moved into her house to help her navigate the recovery process.
She revealed that her mother took charge of her diet and prepared healthy meals, serving as the voice of reason that kick-started her transformation.
The younger sister of singer Niniola Apata noted that as she began losing weight, the visible progress motivated her to keep pushing. She added that the weight loss has greatly improved her life, as she now feels better and moves much more easily during her performances.
She said:
"There was a year I had COVID. It was so bad. I couldn’t breathe. Yeah, it was really bad."
"My mum was just like, ‘I’m sorry for you.’ And then my mum moved into my house. She started helping me with my diet and preparing healthy meals. She became that voice of reasoning and helped me kick-start my journey."
"When you start losing weight, you begin to see the progress and feel good about yourself. You tell yourself, ‘Okay, let’s keep going.’ Sometimes you fall off a little bit, but then you get back on track again and keep going."
"I started to feel better. I started to move better during my performances."
