Nollywood actress Nkechi Blessing has criticised the pressure to associate with self-acclaimed “Lagos big girls,” saying some people are being deceived by the wealthy lifestyles portrayed on social media.
The movie star made the remarks in a post on her Snapchat story on Friday while questioning the desire of some individuals to gain recognition by associating with high-society figures.
She said some of those who project an affluent lifestyle online may not be as financially comfortable as they appear, adding that people who get close to them could discover a different reality.
“Na una want be friends with self-acclaimed Lagos big girls by force; people wey be say na online aesthetic want wound them. The moment you go close, you go too pity them,” she wrote.
The actress said she was not interested in competing for social status or maintaining an elaborate lifestyle for public approval.
Describing herself as a “Yankee broke girl,” Blessing said her priority was having enough money to take care of herself and travel rather than being recognised as a Lagos “big girl.”
“Me, I be Yankee broke girl, I no kuku identify with anything big girl. Make I sha dey see food chop and ticket money to fly round the world… who get pass me no concern me,” she stated.
Blessing also dismissed assumptions that people who do not display their wealth online are financially struggling.
According to her, she prefers to keep her lifestyle private, even if that means being perceived as broke by social media users.
“The pressure to belong to the so-called Lagos big girls can never be for someone like me that likes my space,” the actress said.
She added that she could handle transactions running into hundreds of millions of naira despite not publicly showcasing her lifestyle.
“When matter of N100m to N200m sup, we go chest am without flinching… ’Cus we no dey post lifestyle; dem go call us broke,” she said.
Blessing’s comments come amid renewed attention on the lifestyle and public image of Lagos socialites following the recent online dispute between The Real Housewives of Lagos stars Adeola “Diiadem” Adeyemi and Dabota Lawson.
The disagreement between the two former friends has generated claims and counterclaims on social media involving money, business dealings and public perception.
