The Ministry of Health has assured the public that Ghana has the personnel and resources required to manage Ebola cases, urging people to remain calm and report suspected symptoms promptly to health facilities.
The Ministry’s spokesperson, Tony Goodman, gave the assurance during an interview on Eyewitness News on Wednesday, October 21, cautioning against unnecessary panic while emphasising the importance of vigilance and early medical assessment.
“I want to allay the fears of Ghanaians. Let's not trigger the panic button too early,” he said.
Mr Goodman urged the public to look out for symptoms including fever, body pains, headaches, vomiting and vomiting blood, and to ensure that anyone exhibiting such signs is taken to a hospital or clinic for assessment.
“These are some of the things you quickly have to report to these hospitals for them to do a follow-up. It's not time for us to panic. We have the personnel, we have the resources to take care of these cases in Ghana,” he added.
His comments follow the confirmation of an imported case of Ebola Bundibugyo virus disease in Abuja, Nigeria’s Federal Capital Territory, where 44 contacts have been identified and placed under monitoring.
The World Health Organisation (WHO), in a Facebook post on Tuesday, October 20, said the infected patient was a woman who had recently travelled to Uganda. She is currently in isolation and receiving medical care.
According to Nigeria’s Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, the woman began experiencing symptoms on October 7 and sought treatment at a private health facility in Abuja on October 11. Laboratory tests confirmed the infection on October 20.
Nigeria is the fifth country to detect the virus since an outbreak was declared in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) on May 15, 2026.
