NPP MP Rubbishes Calls For Bi-Partisan Probe Into Menzgold Saga

A Member of Parliament's Finance Committee, Mr.Anthony Effah, has kicked against calls for a full scale bi-partisan parliamentary probe into the Menzgold saga.

Some MPs led by North Tongu MP, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, are advocating for a bi-partisan probe into what many have termed as one of the biggest ponzi schemes in the country's history in recent times.

Speaking on Citi TV's Breakfast Daily, the Asikuma Odoben-Brakwa MP, Anthony Effah, said for now, parliament must allow other state institutions to continue with their work.

“A bi-partisan probe, I am sure is limiting it to NDC and NPP. There are other people out there who belong to other parties. The second question I have about his proposition is after the bi-partisan investigation what are we going to do? Are we going to give the people's money to them? So what is the ultimate benefit of such a relationship or discovery.?

“For instance, if we are to take up that challenge does it mean we have to find wherever he is and hold him in custody? It comes at a cost. So it is not only sitting in committee meetings for a long week and say these are recommendations. So I do not really support the view of a bi-partisan probe. We should not have any party doing it. Let the security people do their job.”

The Ghana Police Service on Monday confirmed earlier reports by Citi News that the Menzgold CEO is under arrest in Dubai.

Nana Appiah Mensah’s arrest was not in relation to the scandal in Ghana, in which his company is unable to pay back thousands of customers their investments.

His arrest, according to the Police statement was to facilitate investigation into claims that he had been involved in a scandalous gold trading deal in Dubai.

The arrest, which was first reported by the Statesman Newspaper's online portal, is believed to have occurred after a complaint filed by an individual in that country, who claims to have been duped in a gold deal by Mr. Appiah Mensah.

Already, Ghanaian officials in Ghana’s Embassy in Dubai, are reported to have visited NAM 1 in the custody of the police.

On Monday, Citi News learnt that a delegation from Ghana was also sent to UAE to engage with authorities there on the next line of action.

Back in Ghana, Nana Appiah Mensah has been declared wanted over his company's inability to pay investors their monies, together with two other directors of the company.

An arrest warrant has been secured to have them brought before the law to answer a charge of defrauding by false pretense.
