The Never Met Mentor

Few days ago, I read a Facebook post by Mustapha Hameed shared by Laud talking about his admiration for President Obama and how he wished and silently prayed to meet this living legend, which he finally did. Then it dawned on me that the legend, I admired so much, Mr. Kofi Annan is no more. On my Masters’ graduation day, I was silently praying he shows up since he was the University of Ghana Chancellor at the time.

Unfortunately, he could not turn up but then, I was confident we would be interviewing him soon with Annonitte Living Legend project. Now, I cry. My wish of having a “sit down” meeting with Mr. Annan remained forever a wish.

However, when I remember what I have learnt from his speeches and leadership style, I get inspired.

I felt challenged from most of his words to the youth. I felt, there’s hope to rise up to the top as young Ghanaian (with similar vision). I realized, he played his part so well and thankfully, he was duly acknowledged. Then, I asked myself…… How well am I playing my part? And what about my fellows too?

Earlier this week, I had the privilege to sign in the condolence book of my “never met Mentor”. It was such a mixed feeling. I wish was writing to Mr. Annan a birthday message, sadly this is not.

Champion Kofi, we could not meet in any city on this earth (as I wished) but then we would continue to meet on the internet and in books as you remain an inspiration to generations now and those yet to come. For now, I can just say this:

You led us so well…
You inspired us.…
You made a positive impact…
You have indeed taught us very well.
