Kumasi: Ahmadiyya Students Get Prizes For Francophonie Festival Competition Victory

The Ashanti Regional Education Directorate has presented prizes to the T. I. Ahmadiyya Girls’ Senior High School (SHS) at Asokore in the Ashanti Region

The school emerged winners in a French drama competition at the 2018 Francophonie Festival held in March this year by Alliance Francaise in Accra.

The school which represented the Ashanti Region at the finals competed against schools including the Chemu SHS, Nalerigu SHS, Kanton SHS and the Akwamuman Senior High Schools (SHSs).

The high school drama competition was on the theme: “Culture and the youth”.

The prizes included; screen projectors, home theatre sets, laptops, books, dictionaries and school bags.

The students and their teacher also received a certificate of participation.

The school emerged winners in the competition at the regional level and has also made to the national level.

Speaking at a brief presentation of the award, the Ashanti Regional Director of the Ghana Education Service (GES), Mrs. Mary Owusu Achiaw congratulated the contestants for the good work done and also making the region proud.

She urged the students to take their studies seriously and remain disciplined throughout their stay in school.

The headmistress of the school, Hajia Ayisha Nyantakyi expressed excitement at the gesture and said the school would continue to make the region proud.

She said the school lacked logistics for students to learn the French language properly.

She also indicated that her outfit would establish a French Center to making the teaching and learning of French easier.

The French tutor who trained the participants for the contest, Winnefred Mirekuwaa Amankwah expressed concern over the unwillingness of Ghanaians to learn the French language.

She called on stakeholders in the education sector to include the teaching and learning of the French Language into the curricula at the primary level.

“Ghanaians don't even have the passion for studying French. It will be interesting to note that people who speak French in public are sometimes not given the needed attention”, she said.

Mrs Mirekuwaa Amankwah encouraged Ghanaian students to take an interest in learning the French language. The participants thanked the school authorities for the support they gave them during the competition.

The occasion set the stage for the convergence of some high profile personalities including Hon. Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum, Deputy Minister in charge of Basic & Secondary Education and Dr Eric Adja, Director of the West Africa regional headquarters of the International Organisation of La Francophonie.
