With less than a year to go until the 2018 Commonwealth Games open- Acting Minister for the Games, Steven Miles has revealed that the Athletes’ Village (Games Village) was developed using environmentally sustainable design principle.

According to Miles: “The project is guided by environmentally sustainable design principle and has been awarded a full 6 leaf EnviroDevelopment Mixed use accreditation from the Urban Development Institute of Australia(UDIA) for its commitment to ecosystems, waste, energy, water, materials and community.”

“The village has achieved a 6 green Star Communities pilot rating from the Green Building Council Australia (GBCA), this is equivalent to ‘World Leadership’ in sustainability.”Miles added.

Thus, ahead the Games more than 135,000 trees will be planted in green spaces around the Games Village.

Furthermore, GOLDOC Manager of Sport Services and former breaststroke champion, Brenton Rickard said: “A significant amount of planning and thought has gone into the design of the village, not only for the time when our athletes will call it home during the games, but also after the games.”

That is to say, the Commonwealth Games Village will provide a lasting legacy post GC2018.
