Literacy 4 Life has conducted a series of reading clinics for the benefit of 150 children in the Afienya, Apollonia, Ashaiman and Otchebleku communities located in the Greater Accra region.
Organized by the 2014 Tigo Ghana Digital Change-maker Sheila Osei-Boakye, the reading clinic is a programme that has been carefully modelled to train teachers to develop fundamental skills in effective teaching in language and literacy for meaningful classroom instruction.
It also complements teachers’ effort to help train children to develop the vital literacy skills to become proficient readers.
Commenting on the programme, Director for Corporate Affairs, Ms. Gifty Bingley said: “Illiteracy among children at the basic school level is a threat to the very foundation of our educational system and national development. That’s why together with Reach for Change, we’re giving support to Literacy 4 Life to use technology to enhance classroom instruction in language and literacy.”
Sheila Osei-Boakye, speaking at the opening of the four day reading clinic said: “My passion for improved educational standards for the under privilege remains. I believe the wide gap in literacy levels between urban children and counterparts in the country can only be bridged through intensive and determined initiatives. I’m grateful for Tigo’s support in striving to achieve this worthy cause.”
To date, Literacy 4 Life has reached over 2,317 children through reading camps, assessment on literacy, the use of the digital application and interactive tool kits since its maiden session in August 2015.
Literacy 4 Life seeks to promote access to quality basic education for children, build capacity and skills training for youth and women, and promote healthy living through medical outreach and education in sexuality and reproductive health.
