Opoku Ware School Introduces Computerized Teaching With Smart Classroom

As a means to promoting interactive teaching at the school, the Opoku Ware Senior High School has introduced a more modernized way of teaching, the Smart Technology Classroom.

Many educationists over the years have advocated for the adoption of interactive ways of teaching to enhance the learners' participation and understanding of what they are taught or what they learn on their own in the classroom. In the light of this a more interactive way of teaching and learning called the Smart board Technology has been introduced and used by countries like America, Canada and Australia.

The Smart board technology which is a computerized system operates on a whiteboard which facilitates the use of texts, pictures and videos for teaching all kinds of subjects. It has an inbuilt mechanism that has an electronic pen which produces characters that are converted into word document forms.

In addition, the system has the capacity of automatically generating questions for students to answer after a lesson has been taught and can translate texts written in English into French whilst giving the student the opportunity to use social media applications like Wassap, Skype, Viber, Facebook and Tango.

The Smart Board Technology allows the teacher to upload needed lesson notes, videos and images unto the system to assist teaching and learning. The internet element in the Board gives the users the opportunity to access more information, and this makes it easier for the students to learn on their own even if the teacher is not present in class. And it enables the class to share an ongoing lesson with other students in another Smart classroom or even those in another school who have the facility.

It is also connected to the students' computers, which makes it possible for students to access the teacher's presentation during the lesson.

Currently, the Opoku Ware School has three of their classrooms equipped with the technology which are fully operating.

According to the Headmaster of the school, Mr F.M Oppong Mensah, the idea of establishing the Smart Board Technology in his school came up when he visited schools in the U.S and Canada on an educational and cultural tour where he observed the use of the technology in their schools.

That the introduction of the facility has contributed immensely to the students' understanding of lessons they hitherto found difficult to grasp due to the abstract nature of presentations on them by teachers. He stated that a special training workshop had been organized for the teachers in the school on the operation of the Board and through that all the teachers are able to use it in their lesson delivery.

Mr. Oppong Mensah commended the Parent-Teacher Association of the school for providing the school with the machines but bemoaned that it was the intention of the school and the PTA to have expanded the technology but the resent restrictions by the government on the collection of fees has crippled their plans.

He appealed to the government, old students of the school, groups and individuals to proffer support to the school to help the school in their intended expansion of the Smart Board Technology.
