Fellow Ghanaians, we the Coalition of Youth for Positive National Development here in referred to as CYPOND, wish to use this medium to register our profound disappointment and utter dismay at the attitude of the Hon. MP for Adanse Asokwa ( Hon. KT Hammond) on the floor of parliament on Wednesday 4/12/13.
We were all lost in astonishment and deeply disappointment when the Adanse - Asokwa representative to Ghana's legislative arm of government sought to pour out his frustrations and seeming self guilty feeling on a very simple and genuine call from the Hon. Dr Benjamin Kunbour( Hon. Majority leader) to a worthy course such as tackling corruption which is a serious bane to our development as a people.
Fellow Ghanaians, recognizing that, “it is not right to beat the side of the drum when its face lies before you”, we consider the Hon. Majority leader's appeal to all legislators to begin the fight against corruption from within the house as very appropriate, timely, unbiased and of course a worthy call from a loyal citizen who has this nation at heart. It is on this note that we find it very unpatriotic and evidently unacceptable for Hon. K.T Hammond to burst out of his inner guilt to condemn Hon. Kumbuor's appeal referring to it as “stupid, nonsensical and foolish”.
In the legendary Chenua Achebe's words, “old women become uneasy when dry bones are mentioned in a proverb”. Hon. K.T Hammond's outburst leaves us with several speculations as to whether he is not sitting on a time bomb of hideous corrupt practices and as to whether he thought the Hon. Majority leader was privy to his perhaps” corrupt past”. Perhaps, is it not also the case that K.T Hammond got himself involved in a dubious act with regards to the drill ship saga? Otherwise, why did he choose to angrily pour his vituperations on the majority leader that was only discharging his parliamentary role without any parochial interest and with no sinister agenda.
Without mincing words, we condemn Hon. Hammond's outburst as un charitable, un accomodating and at contention with the cherished Ghanaian values of tolerance and mutual respect for each others personality. We also tremble in pain at the seeming childishness of some of our legislators whose utter utterances and behaviors drag the name of Ghana's legislative Assembly in the mud. We sometimes, are baffled by their shear show of dis regard to the views of their colleagues and the ordinary citizenry that, we wonder whether they were standing for the good of this country besides their personal interest.
CYPOND however commends Hon. KT Hammond for showing his good sight by being humble and apologizing to Hon Kunbour and the parliament of the republic of Ghana for his infamous breach of due process in parliament .However, we equally want to remind Hon. K.T Hammond that Hon. Benjamin Kunbour sits in parliament as a representative of all the people of the Nandom Constituency. His infamous outburst at him is therefore injurious to the good people of Nandom. More so, as Youth we know that the affable Dr. Benjamin Kunbour is well groomed, competent and without any blemish of corruption around his neck. We therefore are of the view that the values the Hon. Kunbour bears should be the trade mark of all Ghanaian legislators. The fight against corruption requires a concerted effort for all wings of the Ghanaian society with parliament inclusive.
Also, Hon. K.T Hammond's attitude has undoubtedly casted a dark image on Ghana's parliament. We are therefore calling on all parliamentarians to eschew all tendencies that seek to denigrate the hard won reputation of the honorable house, since it portrays an ill side of our democracy.
We conclusively call on all civil society organizations, religious leaders, political leaders and well wishers of this country to condemn such unrefined and nation wrecking attitude such as K.T Hammond's, that is deeply eating into the moral fiber of our society. Thank you.
