Ghanaian striker scored on his league debut for Maritzburg United as they recorded a slim 1-0 win over Polokwane City in the Absa Premier Soccer League on Saturday.
The 24-year-old scored the only goal of the game in the 70th minute with a signature strike at the Harry Gwala Stadium in Pietermaritzburg.
United aimed to get off their season in style with a resounding victory but their guest – the newly-promoted side gave them a tough time and it took Yakubu's predatory instinct to fetch them the game's only goal.
Ernst Middendorp's men piled pressured on the opposition and it fetched them the opening goal.
Midfielder Mario Booysen was felled close to the goal area and Dillon Sheppard tailored a free kick that met Yakubu who clinically finished it off.
Defender Awal Mohammed played the full 90 minutes for Maritzburg United same as Yakubu.
Yakubu joined Maritzburg from AshGold after a botched move to Orlando Pirates.
