Minister concerned about Winneba chieftaincy disputes

By Daily Graphic

The Central Regional Minister, Mr Samuel Sarpong, has urged the chiefs and people of Winneba to work hard to resolve the chieftaincy disputes affecting the celebration of the Aboakyer Festival.

He said the dispute in the area which had been left unresolved had greatly affected the celebration of the festival and discouraged many people from patronising the event.

Mr Sarpong was speaking to the Omanhen of the Effutu Traditional Area, Neenyi Ghartey the VII, and his elders as part of his tour of the Effutu Municipality.

The Minister and his Deputy, Mrs Queenstar Pokua Sawyerr, were on a familiarisation tour of the municipality.

Mr Sarpong said their ancestors would not forgive the present generation 'if we fail to resolve such disputes and forge together to move the development of the communities forward.'

The celebration of the Aboakyer Festival has over the years been tainted due to an unresolved chieftaincy dispute. A section of the people is challenging the legitimacy of the Omanhen, Neenyi Ghartey.

The situation had sometimes led to the celebration of the festival amidst heavy security presence or the celebration of the festival without the participation of the Omanhen, as it happened this year.

There have been occasions when the festival had been cancelled because of the disputes.

He pledged to work with all chiefs to ensure that all such disputes in the region were resolved.

Neenyi Ghartey welcomed Mr Sarpong to the region and noted that his doors were open for discussions on the issue.

He said Winneba was usually peaceful until the approach of the Aboakyer Festival, and attributed the situation to a few disgruntled elements who did not want the area to develop, adding that he would always stand for the truth.

Neenyi Gharety prayed for the success of Mr Sarpong in the region.

He also urged them not to indulge in chieftaincy disputes in the area.

The Effutu Municipal Chief Executive, Nii Ephriam, said the assembly was working had to improve on the lives of the people in the area.

Mr Sarpong inaugurated an Information Communication Technology Centre at Don Bosco Basic School. The facility is expected to serve seven basic schools in the Effutu East Circuit.

Mr Sarpong also inaugurated two six-unit classroom facilities at the Presbyterian Basic School and Ntakofam M/A Basic. He also inspected work on a community-based Health Facility.
