Biriwa (C/R), Feb. 22, GNA - Amicus Onlus Ghana, an International Organization of Volunteers, on Friday donated a new ambulance worth 40,000 dollars to the Baobab Medical Centre at Biriwa, a fishing community in the Mfantseman Municipality of the Central Region.

It also presented a Patient Monitor, valued at 5,000 dollars, to the Saltpond Hospital to enhance health care delivery in the Mfantseman Municipality.

Mr Akunba Ben Asamoahning, Country Director of Amicus Onlus Ghana, who presented the items, said Amicus Onlus' aim was to work towards the creation of sustainable human development through capacity building.

He said the donation was part of its social responsibility towards the two health facilities which it had worked with in the past five years.

Mr Asamoahning said the donation of the new ambulance was to replace a smaller one it had earlier donated to the facility which had broken down due to the pressure on it.

Baobab Medical Centre was established in October 2005 to help address the ever-present challenge of providing quality medical care to Ghanaians, particularly the impoverished, in the rural communities.

He said the centre had provided free and highly subsidised healthcare service and medical outreach programmes in the area and currently attends to approximately 90 patients a day.

It offers clinical services such as general consultations, minor surgeries, dispensary, maternity and midwifery services, anti-natal and post natal care as well as medial laboratory services and eye care.

Ms Yvonne Graham Hayfron, Municipal Director of Health Services, who received the items on behalf of the two facilities, thanked Amicus Onlus for the continuous support to the centre and said the donation was timely since it would go a long way to enhance mobile clinic activities in the community.

She said the necessary arrangements would be made so that the ambulance would be connected to the National Ambulance Services to complement the activities of ambulance services in the municipality.

Nana Kwow Bonko V, Paramount Chief of Biriwa, commended Amicus Onlus for its numerous development projects including Baobab Medical Centre, Baobab Microcredit Scheme, Baobab Academy, Amicus Youth Empowerment Summit and the Baobab University College, geared towards improving the living conditions of beneficiary communities.

He called on Amicus Onlus to continue to support the centre with adequate facilities that would help upgrade it to the status of a municipal hospital to cater for the health needs of Biriwa and its environs.
