President John Dramani Mahama has pledged his full support for the Ghana Scout Association (GSA) to strengthen its role in developing responsible, skilled and patriotic young people through scouting programmes.
The President made the commitment after being inducted as the Life Patron of the Association during a courtesy call by its leadership at the Jubilee House.
Mr Hilary Yaw Awusie, Chief Commissioner, inducted President Mahama into the honorary role in the presence of National Board Chairman William Pitt, Minister for Youth Development and Empowerment George Opare Addo, and Chief Executive Officer of the National Youth Authority, Osman Ayariga.
President Mahama said the objectives of the Scout Movement aligned with the Government’s efforts to promote youth empowerment, job creation and national development.
He said scouting played an important role in building responsible, active and patriotic citizens, adding that he would work with the Association’s leadership to strengthen its activities across the country.
The engagement highlighted the contribution of organised youth movements to human capital development by complementing formal education and other youth empowerment initiatives.
The Ghana Scout Association, which has operated in the country for decades, provides young people with opportunities to develop leadership, teamwork and practical life skills through community service, outdoor activities and character-building programmes.
Mr Awusie said the President’s acceptance of the Life Patron role marked a new chapter for scouting in Ghana and reaffirmed the Association’s commitment to national development.
He said the GSA would continue to empower young people through leadership training, service and character development while expanding partnerships with government institutions and other stakeholders.
Mr Awusie noted that the Association aimed to broaden access to scouting programmes and equip more young people with values and competencies that would support their personal growth and contribution to society.
He said the skills and values promoted through scouting, including discipline, resilience, volunteerism, self-reliance and teamwork, were increasingly relevant in a labour market where employers placed emphasis on soft skills.
Development experts have also stressed that alongside investments in entrepreneurship, technical education and vocational training, strengthening integrity, leadership and civic responsibility remained essential to preparing young people for productive careers and national service.
The involvement of the Ministry for Youth Development and Empowerment and the National Youth Authority in the engagement reflects growing institutional interest in organised youth programmes as part of Ghana’s human capital development strategy.
For the GSA, the President’s endorsement provides an opportunity to deepen its contribution to developing ethical leaders, responsible citizens and a skilled workforce capable of supporting Ghana’s socio-economic transformation.
