President Mahama Calls For Forgiveness

President Mahama implored this large crowd to forgive one another

Thousands of mourners clad in red and black, thronged the park to mourn the death of president Mills.

Some people also used the occasion to cash in as they sold NDC paraphernalia and other funeral items including a black T-shirt embossed with the photograph of the late president.

President Mahama said a committee to plan the funeral of president Mills was already in place and doing its best to ensure a befitting burial for him for which reason he asked Ghanaians to support the committee with wise counsel to them it discharge its mandate effectively.

Touching on the responsibilities ahead of him in view of his relatively young age the president indicated that he could not execute his mandate without the support of Ghanaians and therefore, underscored that the current situation provided him an opportunity to prove that young people were capable of taking over the responsibility of state.

Describing the death of President Mills as a great loss to the nation President Mahama noted that “you can never know the value of something until you lose it” adding that while the late president was alive he was vilified and insulted.

On that score he reiterated his call to Ghanaians to honour the late president by leaving in a peaceful co-existence.

A former Attorney- General in the Mills administration, Mrs Betty Mould-Iddrisu, who addressed members of the gathering in tears, described President Mills' tenure as a period that restored confidence in the governance system in Ghana.

For her the biggest honour Ghanaians could give to the former president was to ensure that President Mahama was inaugurated as President on January 7, 2013.

The Greater Accra Regional Minister, Nii Afotey-Agbo, extolled the virtues of the former president describing him as an advocate of peace.

According to him Ghana had lost a progressive and an illustrious son who would be greatly misses.

Dr Ekow Spio Garbrah, a member of the NDC, also paid tribute to the late president and recalled their days together in the university.

There were also tributes from Professor Agyemang Badu Akosa of the Convention People's Party and other organisations.
