
Koforidua July 19 GNA - Mr Oduro-Kwarteng Marfo, External Relations Manager of the Newmont Akyem Project, has reiterated the Company's commitment to operate in a socially and environmentally responsible manner.
He gave the assurance that Newmont would continue to support in building the capacity of the media in terms of effective reportage on the mining industry.
Mr Marfo made this known when the company interacted with the Eastern Regional Media in Koforidua on Thursday.
He indicated that the Akyem Project's construction is on schedule, within budget whilst human and environmental safety continues to be of immense priority.
Mr Marfo said as per the schedule of the engineering and construction team, the resettlement of those whose households would be directly impacted had been completed by the third quarter of the year.
He used the occasion to enumerate the extensive community development projects Newmont had taken so far in the New Abirem area.
These included construction of a Maternity Ward, Female and Male wards at the New Abirem Government Hospital.
“Two nurses' quarters with each one containing eight rooms and a maternity ward is also in the process of completion for the Adausena Health Post,” he said.
In addition, Newmont has also provided a generator set for the New Abirem Government Hospital.
Mr Marfo mentioned other community development projects under construction, including 14 -unit Police transit quarters, construction of water system at New Abirem/Afosu/Mamanso and Ntronang through the drilling of 10 boreholes to augment water supply.
