Accra, June 2, GNA - An Allied Air Cargo Boeing 727-200 arriving at the Kotoka International Airport with 4 crew, overran runway 21 while landing and came to rest at the Hajj Village near the El- Wak Sports Stadium at about 19:15 hours GMT.
Witnesses said the aircraft broke through the perimeter fence and went across the 37-Burma Camp road colliding with mini bus before halting.
They said an emergency team including the Ghana National Fire Service, Ghana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA), National Disaster Management Organization, the Police as well as the Military were present to restore calm to the scene.
Vice President John Dramani Mahama, who visited the scene, said the accident was a test of the emergency readiness of the Ghana Civil Aviation and directed the GCAA accident team to quickly investigate the cause of the accident.
The crews of the aircraft were taken to the GCAA clinic with various degrees of injuries and the ten occupants of the mini bus hit by the aircraft died on the spot.
Present at the scene were the Minister of Defense, the National Security coordinator, National coordinator of the National Disaster Management Organization, Deputy Minister of Health and other government officials.
