Accra, July 31, GNA - The Ministry of Employment and Social Welfare, has been tasked to champion the formulation of more compressive policies towards the promotion of the welfare and development of children in the country.

Mrs Frema Ashkar, Media and Relations Manager of Solid Express Ghana Limited (SEGL), an import and export company, who made the appeal, also tasked the security agencies to strictly enforce laws on children to check child abuse, defilement, child labour, rape and human trafficking.

She spoke on behalf of Mr Youssef Chahine, Director of SEGL, at the presentation of assorted items worth Ghc12, 500 cedis to the Osu Children's Home, in Accra on Friday.

The company donated items including a gas cooker, deep freezer, school bags, bags of rice, sugar, soap, cooking oil, fruit drinks and baby diapers to the Home.

Mrs Ashkar advised parents to consider their children as the most valuable assert and invest in the welfare, and advocated punitive measures against those who abandoned their children to serve as deterrent to others.

She said the donation was part of the company's corporate social responsibility for the less-privileged in society.

Mrs Ashkar said the company, which imports foods items, thought it prudent to give some of the products to the Home to lessen the trouble in managing the facility.

She said the gesture would be an annual programme, since the children needed love and care.

Mrs Ashkar said that the company has promise to support a child from the orphanage to attain education and also cater for his or her general upkeep.

Mrs Sharon Abbey, Head of Osu Children's Home, thanked the company for the donation, and promised that it would be used for the intended purpose.

She said the Home that has 165 children, and casual workers, who manage the facility, was building a new nursery block to accommodate the growing number of orphans.

Mrs Abbey appealed to individuals and other corporate bodies to come to the aid of the Home.
