Flooded River Birim Takes Over Parts Of Accra-Kumasi Road

By Nana Konadu Agyeman - Daily Graphic

The Birim River Monday overflowed its banks, submerging several farmlands and homes located along the river in the Atiwa District of the Eastern Region.

The floods followed a downpour and they completely submerged a stretch of the Accra-Kumasi highway at Anyinam, making the busy road inaccessible for several hours.

Motorists travelling from both directions of the road had to pull over as the overflowing water took over the highway, causing heavy traffic.

Some of the local people who could swim had to go to the aid of the motorists, some of whom handed over their vehicles to local drivers to cross the flooded section of the road for them.

Other locals also lined up the shoulders of the road to guide motorists to safely cross from one end to the other.

When contacted, police sources at Anyinam indicated that it was only after the floods had receded at about 2 p.m. that the road became accessible.

Speaking to the Daily Graphic via telephone, the District Chief Executive for Atiwa, Mr Emmanuel Attah-Twum, said the river also flooded several homes in the district.

According to him, although there were no casualties, personnel of the National Disaster Management Committee (NADMO) were on the ground assessing the extent of damage caused by the floods.
