Avenor building collapse: 16 unsafe buildings marked for demolition in Accra – Muntaka

The Minister for the Interior, Mohammed Muntaka Mubarak, has announced that 16 structurally unsafe buildings have been identified across the Greater Accra Region and will be demolished in the coming days to prevent further loss of life from building collapses.

The decision follows the collapse of a three-storey building at Avenor in North Kaneshie on Sunday, June 7, which left two people dead and three others injured.

Speaking to journalists during a visit to the scene, Mr. Muntaka said the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) had already flagged several buildings deemed unsafe and unfit for human habitation.

He explained that urgent steps are underway to evacuate occupants and bring down the affected structures before they pose greater risks to residents.

“Currently, NADMO has identified about 16 buildings within the Greater Accra Region that have to come down. We are going to ensure that, coming into the week, they will go and get all those buildings down,” he said.

“We are currently doing the evacuations, and they must bring all those buildings down.”

The Interior Minister added that the move is part of a broader government effort to reduce preventable disasters and eliminate structures that pose serious safety threats to the public.

The Avenor incident adds to growing concerns over building safety in Accra, with repeated incidents of structural failures raising questions about enforcement of construction standards and regulatory oversight.
