Ato Ahwoi is the President of Ghana

The assertion that President Mills is not charge has been given more impetus by the MP of Lower Manya who also doubles as a spokesperson for Nana Konadu Agyeman Rawlings, Hon Teye Nyaunu, after he stated, in a meeting with NDC delegates of Ablekuma North, South and Central, that Ato Ahwoi was the de-facto President of the Republic of Ghana.

Dr Ekwow Spio-Garbrah, a presidential aspirant of the NDC, has also stated that Ato Ahwoi, Chairman of the lucrative Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC), was part of the Fante Confederacy alongside Kofi Totobi-Quakyi, Chairman of the National Communications Authority (NCA), who are undermining the authority of the President

According to Michael Teye Nyaunu, Messrs Ato Ahowi and P.V. Obeng are usurping the powers of the president.

“The only thing you will hear is that Ato Ahwoi and PV would say that they are sacking somebody… This is the extent to which we are going but we can't say this in public,” he added

He continued, “We are telling you how serious the thing is. Let me tell you, a lot of the people surrounding him have taken control. Every Minister is a President…, nobody is controlling any minister. They are all on their own.”

S pio, whose one-time vitriolic engagement with Ato Ahwoi, bequeathed to Ghanaian politics, expressions like “Team B players”, in reference to what for him are mediocre ministerial appointees, was at the throat of the man again when he described him as being the man taking decisions for the president.

He expressed sympathy for the President because of what he considers the undermining mission of the cabal at the presidency.

He said, “On Thursday 8th January 2009, when President Mills had just been sworn in as President, I sat on the couch with him and he said, 'Ekwow I would like you to be my Foreign Affairs Minister'.”

The cabal threatened President Mills and eventually succeeded in dissuading him from making good his promise of giving him the Foreign Affairs portfolio, Spio, as he is fondly referred to, told his host on Metro TV's Good Evening Ghana programme last Thursday.

Dr. Spio-Garbrah, the Chief Executive Officer of the London-based Commonwealth Telecommunications Organization, who was until recently a Vice Chairperson of the NDC, noted that he was not the only person to suffer the dashed promise of President Mills regarding appointments.

  “I am not angry at all but I feel sorry for the president, in the sense that if he wants to give a job to anybody- it happened to me in this case, because there are other people who were promised various positions that they didn't get – he's not being able to do it because somebody comes to threaten and intimidate him (Mills) that 'if you appoint this man, I and my brothers won't work with you'…that is the problem as far as the presidency of Ghana is concerned,” Spio fired.

By this revelation, Ghanaians are being told that President Mills has often come under the threats of the Ahwoi brothers and the other members of the so-called Fante confederacy, as a way of having their way, regarding appointments and other favours at the presidency.

It therefore comes as no surprise that the founder of the NDC has described the people President Mills has surrounded himself with greedy bastards.

Former President Jerry John Rawlings, the man who single-handedly dragged President Atta Mills from obscurity to eventually turn him into a President, told the general public in 2009 that his party's government had been hijacked by some people he described as 'greedy bastards'.

“We have brought people into our midst who are unknown to the party, people we do not know. If we do not wake up to correct the mistakes I will not have anything to do with the party. I have died so many times for the party, being humiliated both locally and internationally. I cannot die for the greedy bastards who have wormed their way into government,” the former President told a group of constituency chairmen of his party in November 2009.
