Dagbon Royal Family Officially Announces Ya‑Na’s Passing to President Mahama

The family of the late Overlord of Dagbon, Ya‑Na Abukari Mahama II, on Monday, July 20, formally notified the Presidency of his passing during a solemn courtesy call at the Jubilee House.

Led by Naa Yeb’Nanton Naa Mahamadu V, the delegation expressed profound gratitude to President John Dramani Mahama for the support he extended both during the king’s illness and after his death.

The spokesperson announced that the revered monarch passed on Saturday, July 11, 2026, and was buried at dawn on Monday, July 13, at the Gbewaa Palace in accordance with Islamic rites and Dagbon custom.

“We wish to formally announce to Your Excellency, the Government and the people of Ghana the passing of His Royal Majesty Ya‑Na Abukari Mahama II, King and Overlord of the Dagbon Kingdom,” the family said.

They disclosed that the third‑day prayers were held on Thursday, July 16, while the seventh‑day prayers will take place on Friday, July 24. The installation of a Regent is scheduled for Friday, July 31.

The delegation praised President Mahama for personally intervening to secure specialised medical care abroad for the Ya‑Na when his condition worsened.

“Your Excellency did not hesitate… This was not merely the act of a President towards a traditional leader; it was the act of a compassionate human being towards a great man whose life and legacy deserved every effort to preserve.”

They also thanked him for ensuring the dignified return of the king’s remains to Ghana.

“You ensured that our king, who lived with dignity, returned home with dignity… an act of grace the Dagbon Kingdom will remember for generations.”

The family pledged to uphold the late monarch’s legacy of peace and unity, and appealed for continued presidential support as Dagbon transitions to new leadership.

Meanwhile, academic activities have resumed in the Yendi Municipality after a week‑long suspension of classes to allow students, teachers and residents to mourn the passing of the Yaa‑Na. Schools reopened on Monday following the observance of traditional mourning customs.
