Dagbon Royal Family Pledges to Uphold Ya‑Na’s Legacy After Announcing His Passing to President Mahama

The family of the late Overlord of Dagbon, Ya‑Na Abukari Mahama II, has vowed to safeguard the peace, unity and bridge‑building he championed throughout his reign after formally notifying the Presidency of his passing.

A delegation led by Naa Yeb’Nanton Naa Mahamadu V visited the Jubilee House on Monday, July 20, to officially announce the death of the revered monarch and to thank President John Dramani Mahama for the support he offered during the Ya‑Na’s illness and after his demise.

Addressing the President, the delegation reaffirmed its commitment to sustaining the late king’s legacy:

“We commit to carrying forward his legacy. We commit to maintaining the peace he worked so hard to build. We commit to continuing the bridge‑building that defined his reign.”

The family disclosed that Ya‑Na Abukari Mahama II passed away on Saturday, July 11, 2026, and was buried at dawn on Monday, July 13, at the Gbewaa Palace in line with Islamic rites and Dagbon custom.

They noted that the third‑day prayers were held on July 16, while the seventh‑day prayers will take place on Friday, July 24. The installation of the Regent, Kampakuya Naa Yakubu II, is scheduled for Friday, July 31.

The delegation commended President Mahama for facilitating specialised medical treatment abroad for the Ya‑Na when his condition deteriorated, and for ensuring the dignified return of his remains to Ghana.
