The Central Region lost properties worth 5.5 billion cedis through disaster related cases such as flood, wind and rain storms and fire between January to December 2002.

The Central Regional Co-ordinator of NADMO, Mr. William Adjei Banin, said this when he inaugurated the Abura-Asebu-Kwamankese district disaster management committee at Abura Dunkwa on Friday.

The eight-member committee has Mr Andrew K. Mensah, the District Chief Executive as chairman.

He said the issue of disaster management and prevention is not a sole responsibility of any individual or agency to manage but a collective responsibility of all stakeholders.

Mr. Banin therefore, called on everyone, especially the district assemblies to assist in evolving strategies at preventing or minimising disasters in the region.

Mr Andrew K Mensah, the District Chief Executive appealed to members of the committee to focus their activities towards disaster prevention instead of allowing disaster to occur and later supply relief items to the victims.

Mr. Mensah asked the committee to find pragmatic solutions to problems and also encourage communities and schools to plant trees to serve as windbreaks.

He also asked headmasters, teachers and stakeholders to assist in finding ways of preventing some of the disasters in the district.
