New Director-General Of GES

Reverend Ama Afo Blay has been appointed Director General of the Ghana Education Service. Her appointment took effect from December 11, 2002. She takes over from John Budu Smith who has been acting in the position.

Reverend Blay, until her appointment, was the Eastern Regional director of the Service.

The confirmation of her appointment has come inspite of earlier protests by the Education workers at the headquarters against her planned appointment. The workers allege that beyond being close to her retirement, Rev Afo Blay cannot be entrusted with such a demanding office considering her past experience at the headquarters.

But President Kufuor appointed her on the advice of the Ghana Education Service Council and in consultation with the Public Services Commission.

The 58-year old educationist holds a Masters degree in Guidance and Counselling from the Emporia State University, Kansas in the United States of America, a first degree in General Education from the University of Cape Coast and a certificate from the Trinity Theological Seminary, Accra.
