Physician Specialist and Cardiologist Fellow at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, Dr Albert Agbi, has advised Ghanaians to cut back on their consumption of salted fish such as koobi and momoni because of their high sodium content.
Dr Agbi said although the foods are popular for the flavour they add to meals, consuming them excessively could raise sodium levels in the body and increase the risk of health complications, particularly high blood pressure.
Speaking on the Citi Breakfast Show on Friday, September 11, he singled out koobi as a food that requires caution because of the large amount of salt used in its preparation.
“It’s nice, it gives flavour. But it’s very high in sodium. Because of the salt,” he said.
He explained that too much sodium can cause the body to retain fluid, which may raise blood pressure and place added pressure on the heart and blood vessels, increasing the risk of cardiovascular problems.
While acknowledging the popularity of salted fish among Ghanaians, Dr Agbi said he would not advocate eliminating it completely from their diets but stressed the importance of moderation.
“I'm not going to touch that for Ghanaians because I know they will not forgive you. So I’m not recommending you to stop. But in moderation,” he said.
The cardiologist also encouraged Ghanaians to consume more potassium-rich foods, including fresh coconut water, bananas and other fruits, highlighting potassium as an important nutrient for the body.
He noted that recognised dietary approaches such as the DASH and Mediterranean diets place emphasis on foods rich in potassium as part of healthier eating patterns.
Dr Agbi consequently urged the public to be more conscious of both the types and portions of food they consume, while combining healthier dietary choices with regular physical activity to reduce the risk of lifestyle-related diseases.
