JAKE OBETSEBI-Lamptey, newly-elected Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has asked government to stop making verbal allegations of crime against leading members of the party and rather send such persons to court if they have really committed crimes.
Days after the NPP elected its new leadership, its Chairman, Jake Obetsebi-Lamptey, General Secretary; Kwadwo Owusu-Afriyie aka Sir John and National Organizer, Moctar Musa Bamba, have been accused of criminality by a number of government officials including an aide to President Atta Mills, Nii Lantey Vanderpuye, himself a suspected electoral thief.
The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has also accused the three persons of similar offences, with Nii Lantey Vanderpuye saying on national television that Mr. Obetsebi-Lamptey is not a Ga and that the Ga people do not see him as one of their own.
The NPP Chairman, in response to the allegations, has hit back, saying, “It is negative noise from the NDC and they feel if they repeat it long enough, it would stay. They have been in power for over a year and if they feel I, Sir John or Bamba have done anything wrong, why is the government wasting time? They should send us to court and stop the negative noise.
“The NDC is quaking at the caliber of persons elected to form the leadership of the NPP and that explains why they have suddenly started smearing us with all sorts of allegations and threatening court actions here and there. They are quaking in the legs at our team.”
Mr. Obetsebi-Lamptey, speaking on Metro TV's 'Good Evening Ghana', debunked talks that the NPP has become polarized after the conference to elect a new leadership and that some of the candidates who lost are not happy with those who won.
Jake said this cannot be true because Stephen Ntim, the second leading contender for the chairmanship, had personally come to his house to assure him of his support.
“Stephen Ntim was in my house to congratulate me and assured me of his support and all that, and our party, across board, is one big party where we are united,” Jake added.
