December 07, 2009
Kumasi, Dec. 7, GNA - A Kumasi Circuit Court, presided over by Mr Justice Richard Mac Kogyapwah, has sentenced two young men to 17 years imprisonment, each, for robbery.
They were also ordered to refund the money and cell phones they seized from two toilet attendants or in default serve additional three years.
Isaac Oppong alias "Kaweweh," 22, and Kwaku Prempeh alias "2 Pack," 19, denied the charges of conspiracy and robbery.
Four of their accomplices are on the run.
Police Inspector Philip Yao Bebli told the Court that the complainants; Kofi Niso Oloi Grushie and Kofi Yogo, both Burkinabes, are public toilet attendants at Ashanti Town in Kumasi.
On November 7, at about 2300 hours, the complainants who had by then closed from work were on their way to buy some food.
He said, on reaching a spot near the "Abbey's Park" the convicts and four others on the run attacked them with sticks, knives and pairs of scissors.
Niso resisted but was overpowered and he and his friend were robbed of their mobile phones and GH¢30.00.
He received deep cuts on his chest and wrist and fell unconscious.
Police Inspector Bebli said Yogo however slipped away after being hit with a stick by Prempeh and returned later to the robbery scene with some friends, where they picked up Niso and rushed him to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) for treatment.
A complaint was made to the Manhyia Police.
Two days after the crime, Oppong was apprehended, and he led the police to arrest Prempeh
Police Inspector Bebli said the two admitted the offence in their caution statement.
