Ghana Hosts Aviation Authorities and others within ECOWAS

By Daniel Nonor (Email [email protected]) - Ghanaian Chronicle

Ghana has been nominated by the ECOWAS Commission to host the first ever meeting of all stakeholders of the aviation industry that operate within the ECOWAS sub-region. The meeting, which is scheduled for the December 3 and 4 in Accra will be hosted by the Ministry of Transport through the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA).

About hundred participants will attend the meeting that is expected to address very key aviation issues within the sub-region. ECOWAS has, for the past few years, been working on achieving a seamless economic integration of all Member States through transportation, reduction of imports and exports tariffs, trade liberalisation, and construction of joint border posts, among others. As all these programmes and initiatives are being worked on by the political leaderships of Members States, ECOWAS is currently concentrating on air transport liberalisation and harmonisation.

According to the Director-General of the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority, Air Cdre Kwame Mamphey, this meeting of all key stakeholders within the sub-region has become necessary following some resolutions by arrived at in a joint meeting of Ministers of Aviation/Infrastructure/Finance and Chief Executives of Airlines in Yamoussokro in June, this year.

The meeting of key aviation players in Accra, according to Air Cdre Kwame Mamphey, will offer the various players in the aviation industry, ie, regulators, airports, airlines and air navigation service providers the opportunity to raise key issues within their respective operational areas so the meeting could address them once and for all for the attention of the political leadership of Members States of the sub-regional body.

The Accra meeting is expected to address, among others, issues on the creation of a common air transport market in West Africa; the creation of autonomous Civil Aviation Authorities, ensuring the safety and security of the airspace and air transport system within ECOWAS, the provision of modern airport infrastructure and the harmonisation of air transport and civil aviation regulations and legislations across Member States.
