A misunderstanding that briefly threatened to disrupt the launch of the Akyem Kotoku Cooperative Mining Scheme in the Eastern Region was swiftly resolved after government officials engaged concerned youth and assured them of inclusion in the programme.
Contrary to reports suggesting widespread discontent among party executives, sources at the event indicated that only a few youth expressed concerns after missing information about an earlier training exercise linked to the Responsible Cooperative Mining and Skills Development Programme (rCOMSDEP).
The youth had reportedly planned a protest because they were unable to participate in the initial training and feared they would be excluded from the programme's benefits.
However, the situation was brought under control after the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Hon. Emmanuel Armah Kofi Buah, met with the group and assured them that arrangements would be made for them to undergo training and be enrolled onto the programme.
Following the engagement, the youth agreed to abandon their planned protest and subsequently joined the official launch ceremony.
A video circulating on social media from the event has also been clarified. According to sources, some youth in the community initially believed that individuals wearing red armbands had come to disrupt the programme and attempted to prevent them from entering the venue.
The misunderstanding was later resolved after it was explained that the individuals were participants who had come to join the programme, paving the way for the event to proceed peacefully.
In the minister’s address, he confirmed that provisions have been made for the affected youth to begin training from tomorrow, after which they will be captured in the rCOMSDEP database.
He reiterated that the cooperative mining initiative is an all-inclusive programme designed to create opportunities for all eligible Ghanaians interested in responsible and sustainable mining.
He stressed that no one would be left out, assuring community members that efforts were being made to ensure broad participation in the programme.
