INFORMATION reaching DAILY GUIDE indicates that Members of Parliament from the Brong Ahafo Region have threatened to boycott tomorrow's grand durbar of chiefs and people to be held at the Sunyani Jubilee Park to climax the year-long 50th anniversary celebration of the Region.
The MPs have also accused the organizers of excluding them from all the programmes that have so far taken place, as no legislator has been involved in the anniversary celebration.
In an exclusive interview with DAILY GUIDE, the Chairman of the Brong Ahafo Caucus in Parliament, Paul Okoh, said the organizers of the BA@50 celebration have decided not to deal with MPs in the region as they have clearly demonstrated, since not a single invitation has been extended to any of the MPs in relation to celebration activities thus far.
Hon. Okoh hinted DAILY GUIDE that not a single MP, as of the time of filing this report, has received an invitation to tomorrow's all-important event which is expected to see the likes of President John Evans Atta Mills, top government officials, ambassadors and gurus of the ruling party in attendance.
He disclosed that the organizing committee has got some unsettled issues with the MPs.
According to him, the anniversary committee failed to deliver on their promise of putting two MPs on the planning committee.
He also accused the organizers of ignoring public outcries to build statues of Ghana's first president, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, and some prominent chiefs in the region in front of Prime Minister Dr. Kofi Abrefa Busia's bust, with the clear intention of blocking the former prime minister's statue from public view.
Meanwhile, Chairman of the planning committee and Prangmanhene, Nana Kwadwo Nyarko III, has disclosed to DAILY GUIDE that the two former presidents, Jerry John Rawlings and John Agyekum Kufuor will not be attending the grand durbar.
According to Nana Kwadwo Nyarko, for some reason, which he failed to disclose, the two former presidents were not invited to the function.
He however stated that Mr. Rawlings has been selected by the committee to receive a special award slated for November 14, in recognition of his contributions to the development of the region.
DAILY GUIDE has learnt that President Kufuor was tactically left out of the programme by the organizers for unexplained reasons, although initial arrangements were to invite him.
Sources said a delegation which was to be sent to the former President was recalled after delivering the message to former President Rawlings.
The delegation was led by the Deputy Brong Ahafo regional minister, Eric Opoku. Mr. Kufuor is expected to travel out of the country today, DAILY GUIDE has learnt.
The committee chairman told DAILY GUIDE that preparations were far advanced for a mega event, come Saturday, as most of the dignitaries as at Thursday had arrived for the durbar.
Meanwhile, Vice President John Mahama is due in town today to commission some key projects in the region, including the Sunyani Regional Hospital, a Golden Jubilee ICT Centre and a GETFund Hostel at the KNUST Sunyani Campus, constructed by the previous administration.
