Tamale Interchange Was a Waste of Money — General Amin Fires at Akufo-Addo Govt

Former Deputy Communications Director of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), General Amin, has launched a scathing critique of the multi‑million‑dollar Tamale Interchange, describing it as an unnecessary and wasteful expenditure by the Akufo‑Addo administration.

The interchange—touted by the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) as a transformative infrastructure project for northern Ghana—has faced persistent scrutiny from opposition figures since its commissioning.

Speaking in an exclusive interview on Hot 93.9FM’s Hot Morning Drive with host Oman Nana, General Amin insisted that the central business district of Tamale did not require a massive concrete flyover to address its traffic challenges.

“The Tamale overpass the NPP constructed is a waste… Tamale doesn’t need an overpass,” General Amin argued.

He accused the government of ignoring basic urban planning principles in its rush to execute the project under the Sinohydro infrastructure barter agreement.

According to him, Tamale’s structural layout already provides a natural blueprint for diverting heavy transit traffic away from the city centre—without the need for an expensive elevated interchange. He maintained that a functional ring road and bypass system would have been a more practical and cost‑effective solution for the metropolis.

General Amin’s comments add to the ongoing debate over the relevance, cost, and long‑term value of the interchange, which the NPP continues to hail as a landmark achievement.
