Aquinas Wins Road Safety Debate

By Daily Graphic

The Omanhene of the Akuapem Guan Traditional Area, has called on the law enforcement agencies to ensure that road offenders are punished.

“The law enforcement agencies have relaxed in the performance of their duties and that is why road regulations are not being obeyed,” Nana Asiedu Okoo Ababio III, noted with concern.

Nana Ababio said this during a debate on road safety between St Thomas Aquinas and Labone Senior High schools held in Accra

It was organised by the National Road Safety Commission (NRSC) and the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) as part of activities marking the 10th anniversary of the two organisations.

It was on the theme, “Road Safety - A shared and collective responsibility”.

Nana Ababio observed that the general public, especially drivers who were the main cause of the accidents did not understand road safety messages well.

He, therefore, described the move by the DVLA and the NRSC to increase awareness on road safety a decision in the right direction.

Nana Ababio urged the public to join forces with the various institutions and stakeholders to reduce the number of road accidents in the country.

St Thomas Acquinas won the debate with 267 points, while Labone SHS had 257 points.

The Greater Accra Regional Manager of the NRSC, ACP Victor Tandoh (Retd), pleaded with all road users to adhere to traffic rules and regulations at all times, adding that if that was done, the 1,600 people who die through road accidents annually would reduce.
