The 2008 presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, has sent a message of condolence to the victims of last Monday's boat tragedy on the Volta Lake.
In a statement, Nana Akufo-Addo said “I join many other Ghanaians to sympathize with the families of those who died in this unfortunate and tragic accident, which by all means could have been prevented. We deeply regret this needless misfortune, and hope that you will accept our heartfelt condolences and remain strong in these challenging times.”
Nana Akufo-Addo further adds that “it is essential that we demonstrate the important values that we put on the lives of Ghanaians, by ensuring that the safety and health standards of the people, especially in the transport sector, where necessary, are reviewed, maintained and enforced vigorously. This disaster poses a question to us as a society, what lessons we have learnt in previous disasters and what measures have been put in place to curtail future occurrences.”
He concludes that, “it is such a tragic loss to all of us, and I hope that we have all learnt the necessary lessons to ensure that such painful accidents do not keep recurring.”
