Tongo (U/E), Oct. 19, GNA - Farmers Organization Network in Ghana (FONG), in collaboration with other farmers' organizations, has called on government to provide an enabling environment for women to fully develop and sustain their capacity to innovate.
FONG, a non-governmental organization working to empower rural women through farming and to take active part in decision making on national issues, made the call when it celebrated the annual world rural women's day on the theme, 'Rural Women at the Heart of Innovation', at Tongo in the Talensi Nabdam District, at the weekend.
The celebration was to create awareness of the impact of the rural woman's role in the upkeep of the family. It brought together rural women from all the districts in the region who displayed locally made items such as indigenous northern dishes, dresses and baskets.
The women, who attended the function in groups made a recommendation to government to encourage a more balanced representation of women and men in decision making and to ensure that attention is paid to women's needs and perspectives.
The women said the state needed to stimulate coordination and exchange of information between organizations in the private and public sectors and strengthen institutions that foster learning processes, innovation and access to technology for rural women.
