The Ministry of Women and Children's Affairs has again called on political parties contesting the Chereponi bye-election to nominate women as candidates for the election scheduled for September 29. A statement signed by the sector Minister, Akua Sena Dansua, said the call is in line with a communiqué signed by representatives of the NDC, NPP, CPP and PNC at a high level workshop organized by the IEA in Akosombo.
The political parties called for the establishment of a voluntary quota of 30% positions for women in the administration of the parties and the selection of parliamentary candidates, as a means of promoting women.
The Chereponi bye-election presents another opportunity for political parties to show their commitment to the spirit and letter of the communiqué and the promises made in their manifestoes towards improving the status of women. The Chereponi seat became vacant following the death of Doris Asibi Seidu.
