Sheikh I.C. Quaye begins mosquito spraying exercise

Former Greater Accra Regional Minister, Sheikh I.C. Quaye, has started a spraying exercise which he said would rid the city of mosquitoes ahead of the arrival of visiting United States President Barack Obama.

The exercise which is targeting open drains and refuse bins within Aladjo, Kotobabi and parts of Avenor would ensure that Mr Obama is not bitten by mosquitoes, Sheikh Quaye has hinted.

Early this week on the floor of Parliament, I.C Quaye, also MP for Ayawaso Central, said he would lead a crusade although he was yet to secure his common fund for the first quarter of 2009.

According to the MP, the exercise is necessary considering expected high number of visitors into the country during President Obama's visit on Friday.

Mr Obama is due to arrive at 8:50pm with his wife Michelle and children, Sasha, aged 8 and Malia, aged 11.

"There is the need for us to spray to get rid of mosquitoes as I said in Parliament. Today is the fulfillment of my promise,” he stressed, adding “wherever we spray today is still valid for two weeks.”

Ahead of the visit of Mr Obama however, government appears to be lacing its boots for a great reception for the world's most powerful family.

A brief tour of major streets of Accra indicated painting and other finishing touches to roadside buildings. The exercise could run into Friday, the day Mr Obama is due to arrive.
