World environment day held in Winneba

Mr Robert Andrews Ekow Ghunney, Effutu Municipal Chief Executive has expressed his concern about the fast rate of environmental degradation in the country and called for a pragmatic effort to reverse the situation.
Mr Ghunney said this at a forum, as part of activities marking the celebration of World Environment day at Winneba.
The theme for the celebration was “Carbon dioxide, kick the habit”.
He said it was important to stop activities that degrade the environment, and that, programmes and policies should be put in place to help sustain and reverse the loss of environmental resources.
Mr Louis Doe Atsiatorme, a student in the University of Education, Winneba, in a message to mark the day said most of the problems relating to climate change are caused by human beings.
He called for vigorous education and creation of awareness to change people's attitude to help sustain the environment.
The programme was organized by the Centre for School and Community Science and Technology Studies (SACOST), of the University of Education, Winneba, in collaboration with Challenging Heights, a Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) and the Effutu Municipal Environmental Health and Protection Unit.
Neenyi Ghartey VII, Omanhene of Effutu Traditional Area, in a speech read for him, called for the formation of environmental clubs in the communities and schools to educate the people on the need to protect the environment.
Mr Stephen Dennis, head of SACOST, said outfit would promote interdisciplinary research and development activities, related to science and technology to help improve science and technology education in Ghana.
Forty Acacia tree seedlings were planted along the street of the Municipal Assembly block, to commemorate the occasion.
