Manhyia South MP Nana Adjei Baffour Awuah has been granted GH¢10 million bail, with two parliamentary colleagues standing as sureties, allowing him to remain out of custody while an Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) investigation continues.
The High Court ruled that the MP could not be considered a flight risk. However, it directed him to make himself available to investigators and return to court for further proceedings.
The next court dates are October 26 and November 2, 2026, with both hearings scheduled for 10 a.m.
The bail conditions followed opposing submissions from the defence and prosecution regarding the MP’s conduct during the investigation and the need to secure his attendance.
His lawyer, Samuel Atta Akyea, told the court that Nana Baffour Awuah voluntarily reported to EOCO on October 1, accompanied by his legal team. He said the MP spent about eight hours at the office, where he was detained and questioned.
The defence relied on this account to argue that the MP had demonstrated a willingness to cooperate and should be granted bail on his own recognisance.
Mr. Atta Akyea also challenged allegations surrounding a settlement involving SIC Life Savings and Loans. According to the defence, the matter originated from efforts by a former law firm associated with the MP to recover debts owed by Equity Savings and Loans. Subsequent disputes over the attachment of property and a third‑party claim eventually led to settlement negotiations.
The defence rejected the description of the GH¢9.85 million settlement as a dissipation of funds, arguing that it arose from commercial negotiations and the payment of legal fees.
Dr. Justice Srem‑Sai, the Deputy Attorney-General and Minister for Justice, presented a different account of the MP’s engagement with EOCO. He told the court that the office had invited Nana Baffour Awuah in February 2026 and made further attempts to secure his attendance.
The prosecution also referred to an attempted arrest at the Accra High Court on September 23 and an arrest warrant issued on September 30, arguing that the circumstances justified conditions to ensure the MP remained available.
The court ultimately granted bail while maintaining the requirement for his cooperation with investigators and attendance at future hearings.
EOCO’s investigation involves alleged unauthorised financial transactions connected to SIC Life Savings and Loans. The offences under investigation include criminal conspiracy, financial loss, money laundering, and tax‑related offences.
