Audit Service Trains Liberia Auditors

The effective administration of the Ghana Audit Service has received international recognition, as 10 of its top staff left the country yesterday for Liberia for four months to assist the country to audit selected state organizations as well as provide the needed on-the-job training to newly-recruited staff.

This is due to a response to an earlier request made by John Morlu, Auditor-General of Liberia to Edward Dua Agyemang, Auditor General of Ghana.

According to Mr. Dua Agyemang, in the spirit of regional co-operation, particularly among supreme institutions in West Africa, the Ghana Audit Service agreed to assist the General Auditing Commission of Liberia.

“The General Auditing Commission of Liberia had approach the Audit Service in view of the latter's track record in promoting good governance, accountability and transparency in the management of public resources,” he explained.

“The General Auditing Commission, which is the supreme audit institution in Liberia, lost most of its experienced staff during the civil war and has recruited new staff that need on-the-job training and exposure, hence the invitation to Ghana Audit Service.”

Addressing the selected auditors before their departure, the Auditor General urged the auditors to uphold a high level of performance so that the reputation of the Ghana Audit Service which has been built over the years would be maintained.

He asked them to revise their professional methodologies as well as the international accounting and auditing standards.

The team which is made up of Assistant Auditors-General and other experienced auditors, would assist the General Auditing Commission in auditing some selected public institutions such as the Ministry of Finance and the Social Security and Welfare Corporation among others.

The government of Liberia is funding the trip with support from the United Nations Mission in that country.
