Jama'at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM), al-Qaeda's Sahel affiliate, says it targeted a vehicle carrying Malian army and Russian Africa Corps personnel with an improvised explosive device on the morning of Monday, 2 November 2026. The claimed strike took place on the road between Sévaré and Konna in Mali's Mopti region.
Casualties, damage and even the exact location rest on JNIM's claim alone and should be treated as unverified. Bamako has also been reluctant to publish casualty figures, which makes verification harder.
A familiar pattern
The claim fits a long-running pattern. JNIM claimed an IED strike on an army vehicle near Sévaré in October 2024, and in January 2026 said it destroyed a vehicle carrying Malian soldiers and Africa Corps personnel between Boni and Douentza. I
n March 2026, it claimed an IED attack on a convoy of Malian soldiers and Africa Corps members along the Niafunké–Tonka road in the Timbuktu Region.
Monitoring of JNIM's Az-Zallaqa media outlet shows Russian personnel are named as direct targets. Its statements have identified Russian forces as targets in operations near Kaka, Dioura, Konna, Sévaré, Djabali and Niono.
Why the Sévaré–Konna axis matters
Sévaré, beside Mopti, is a key military and logistics hub in central Mali. On 25 April, JNIM and the Tuareg separatist FLA launched coordinated attacks on Kati, Bamako, Gao, Kidal, Sévaré and Mopti. Roads around it carry troops, supplies and Africa Corps patrols.
IEDs are a cheap way to hit those routes. Analysts note that such attacks form part of a strategy aimed at roads, supply lines and the state's credibility, not only at soldiers. JNIM has also pursued a fuel blockade, announced in September 2025, to squeeze the state economically.
The civilian cost
Attacks on the army and its Russian partners often lead to reprisals. An example from March 2026: a JNIM ambush near Nampala killed nearly a dozen Malian soldiers and Africa Corps fighters days after soldiers and mercenaries reportedly executed seven Fulani civilians. Analysts warn that each reprisal against civilians feeds JNIM's recruitment.
What to watch
Whether the Malian army or Africa Corps acknowledges the incident
Casualty claims and any images or video from JNIM
Reprisals against communities around Sévaré and Konna
Wider JNIM pressure on central Mali's roads, which Russia's Africa Corps has struggled to secure despite its operational capacity
